Brother Michael Gaworski was the founder of the Franciscan Brothers of Peace, a Pro-Life Religious Brotherhood devoted to living and proclaiming the Gospel of Life.[1] While still in college, Brother Michael befriended Paul O’Donnell, who later joined the Franciscan Brothers of Peace. Together, Brother Michael and Brother Paul founded the Pro-life Action Ministries, an organization that presently has more than 20,000 members. Nicknamed “the pro-life brothers,” Brother Michael and the Franciscan Brothers dedicated their lives to following the Rule of St. Francis by praying for and serving the poor.[2] In 1991, Brother Michael went into cardiac arrest after contracting a bacterial pneumonia. Although paramedics revived Brother Michael, he spent the rest of his life unable to communicate or move due to the brain damage he suffered. Despite the pressure from medical staff to “pull the plug,” Brother Paul and the other Franciscan Brothers witnessed to their pro-life calling by loving Brother Michael all the more, saying, “Caring for [Brother Michael] is a natural part of our vocation, not a ministry.”
