Topic: OK to use contraception?
Why isn’t it OK to use contraception? Isn’t it better to use contraception than to accidentally get pregnant and then need an abortion?
Dear Sharon,
It sounds like a good idea to use contraception instead of abortion, but when we look closely at them, they are both the result of an incorrect understanding of the marriage covenant. In the 1960’s, we were promised that the widespread use of contraception would lead to stronger marriages, less poverty, and decreased anxiety due to the stress of uncontrolled population growth within the family and the society as a whole. Instead, since the widespread use of contraception, we have seen sky rocketing rates of abortion, premarital and extramarital sex, sexually transmitted diseases, and single parent homes which is the number one risk factor for poverty. Most people do not realize this, but contraceptive pills actually cause abortions. Read any package insert that comes with the birth control pills and they describe three methods of action. Hormones can prevent ovulation so that an egg is not available for fertilization, hormones can change mucus so that sperm cannot travel to the egg, or hormones change the mucus so that a fertilized egg cannot implant and the newly conceived person washes out with the menstrual flow. Ultrasound studies have shown that women can ovulate even when on the Pill which can result in millions of very early abortions. I understand that there are legitimate times when you might want to delay or avoid pregnancy. Natural Family Planning methods are extremely effective, do not cause abortions, and they respect and strengthen the vows of marriage. Ask your priest or pro-life doctor where you can learn these methods.
