Abortion is wrong because it is the killing of a baby, not because the Church says it is wrong.

Yet the Church enlightens and strengthens our consciences, especially in an age that has forgotten that killing babies is wrong.

The strongest and most comprehensive teaching document of the Catholic Church on abortion is The Gospel of Life (“Evangelium Vitae”), published by Pope John Paul II in 1995 after he had called a special meeting of the Cardinals of the Church several years earlier to discuss the growing threats to human life around the world.

This document has been received with gratitude by Christians of all denominations and others of good will who want to help end abortion. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this document in 2025, we want to bring it again to the attention of the world. From this page you will be able to link to the text of the document itself, to a study guide prepared by Priests for Life, and to other news, commentary, and tools to teach and share the document.

Thank you for all you do for what this document calls “a great campaign on behalf of life!”

EVANGELIUM VITAE
