TO NEWLYWEDS AT GENERAL AUDIENCE OF 23 JULY, 1988
The Encyclical "Humanae Vitae" contains the necessary directives for
responsible parenthood
In view of the fact that 25 July is the 20th
anniversary of Paid VI's memorable Encyclical "Humanae Vitae", the Holy
Father urged the newlyweds who attended the general audience on 23 July to read
and meditate on the encyclical.
Dear Newlyweds!
Accept my joyous greeting and my good wishes for your new life! I am grateful
for your presence and I invoke on you the choicest heavenly favors, so that your
married life will always be serene, happy, warm hearted, united by mutual love.
Today I wish to remind you of the Encyclical Humanae Vitae which Paul VI
published twenty years ago on 25 July 1968. I exhort you to read and meditate on
this important document of the Church. With enlightened doctrinal certainty, and
with deep human sensitiveness it traces the necessary directives for responsible
parenthood, the grace of God, and peace of conscience. May this be your firm
resolve, resulting from your pilgrimage to Rome and may you be sustained by my
special Blessing which I impart to you with all my heart!
