Urge your Senators and Congressman to protect vulnerable teens!

February 13, 2015

Dear Friends,

Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen last week introduced the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act in the U.S. Senate (S. 404) and the House (H.R. 803) to ensure that teenage girls cannot be taken across state lines to have an abortion without their parents' knowledge.

Click here to see those in the Senate and click here to see those in Congress, who have signed on as co-sponsors to the bills.

Where are the others?
Where are the Democrats?
Shouldn’t the protection of young girls be a bipartisan effort?

More than 80 percent of Americans believe an individual should not be able to take a minor across state lines for an abortion without her parents’ knowledge.

The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act would implement these widely shared values.

Here’s the issue. Many states have "parental involvement" laws, that require either a parent's consent or knowledge prior to a minor's abortion. But sometimes these states border on states that do not have any such requirements.

And time and time again, a minor -- or the adult who has impregnated her -- will seek to evade those requirements simply by crossing state lines.

This bill seeks to address that problem.

First, the bill would prohibit knowingly taking a minor across state lines with the intent of obtaining an abortion if this action evades the parental involvement law in her home state. These provisions passed the Senate with 65 bipartisan votes in 2006. Second, the bill requires abortion providers to notify a parent of an out-of-state minor before performing an abortion.

Do not be misled by the claims of some extreme abortion advocates.

The bill would not apply when an abortion is necessary to save a girl’s life or when she is a victim of abuse or neglect.  This legislation is carefully drafted to focus on what unites the vast majority of Americans - that parents should be involved before their child has an abortion.  We hope that you agree and will help us protect children and support parents.

Abortion is a surgical procedure with the risk of complications, and parents have important information about their child’s health and medical history. Parental consent is required for tattoos, ear piercing and to receive over-the-counter pain medication in schools.

The very least our nation should be able to do is make sure parents know when their child is headed for an abortion.

This bill has the full support of Priests for Life and the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, and I know it has your support as well.

I am asking you to take some time from your busy schedules to make two phone calls; one to each of your United States senators. This bill should have the support of every person elected to serve the American public. If your senator will not support this bill, ask him or her to tell you why.

When you click the link below, you will find a sample script for the telephone calls to your Senators and Congressman or their staffs. Please make these calls as soon as you can. This bill could have a direct impact on someone you know and love – your daughter, granddaughter, niece or neighbor.

So please click here for the information on how to call your Senators and Congressman and what to say. And please send this email to as many people as you can!

Sincerely,

Fr. Frank Pavone
