The Catholic View for Women

Fall 2013 - Episode 8: Body Image Blues

Highlighted Saint
St Mary Magdalene

Feast Day is July 22

Disciple: In Gregory the Great’s interpretation, Mary Magdalene was the repentant prostitute who anointed Jesus’ feet and asked him to forgive her sins, becoming his disciple. She was present at the crucifixion and was the first witness of the Resurrection. In the apocryphal tradition, she evangelized Provence and died there. From there, her cult spread throughout Europe.

She is sometimes depicted in elegant dress; sometimes she is disheveled, perhaps covered only by her own long hair. Her primary attribute is the ointment jar, to which can be added the symbols of a penitent.

Protector: Gardeners, perfume-makers, glove makers, and the penitent.

Names: Mary is from the Egyptian and means “beloved”; in the Hebrew (from Miriam) it means “lady”. Magdalene is from the Hebrew and means “from Magdala”.

Extreme Makeover
Extreme Makeover by Teresa Tomeo

Teresa Tomeo pulls together the latest research on social behavior and trends to demonstrate that women are harming themselves and their chances for true happiness by adopting the thoroughly modern, sexually liberated lifestyle portrayed in magazines and movies. Packed with not only persuasive statistics but also powerful personal testimonies, Extreme Makeover shows that it is not the slogans of the sexual revolution and the women’s liberation movement that free and dignify women, but the beautiful teachings of the Catholic Church.
