TITUSVILLE, FL - Priests for Life National Director Frank Pavone issued the following statement today regarding a court challenge to the wording of a summary of a proposed amendment to the Missouri State Constitution.

“Abortion supporters do not want to deal honestly with the topic of abortion,” Pavone said. “They are - and have always been - profoundly dishonest with the American public about abortion, so it’s ironic that they are the ones now complaining about misleading language.”

A bench trial Wednesday centered on a summary prepared by Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft that abortion advocates say is misleading. The “fair ballot language” summarizes the questions in Amendment 3 that voters will be asked to decide. The language is posted next to sample ballots in every polling station in the state.

The summary says: “A ‘yes’ vote will enshrine the right to abortion at any time of pregnancy in the Missouri Constitution. Additionally, it will prohibit any regulation of abortion, including regulations designed to protect women undergoing abortions and prohibit any civil or criminal recourse against anyone who performs an abortion and hurts or kills the pregnant women.”

Pavone commented, “The wording of the ballot initiative itself is far less clear and Secretary Ashcroft’s summary cuts right to the heart of what this amendment would do. Abortion advocates don’t like it for one simple reason: The more people find out about what they’re up to, the more they reject it.”

Cole County Circuit Judge Cotton Walker said he could rule as early as today.
