STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In a major victory for pro-life advocates who have long decried conditions in abortion clinics, a Philadelphia jury on Monday found abortion provider Dr. Kermit Gosnell guilty of three first-degree murder charges and one count of involuntary manslaughter.

Gosnell, 72, was convicted of murdering three babies who were born alive in late-term abortions and also of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a mother, Karnamaya Mongar, who underwent an abortion.

"The guilty verdict on charges of killing babies following abortion shows that the law recognizes a point at which the 'right to choose' must yield to the right to life, and also shows that abortionists don't know where that point is," said Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, headquartered in New Dorp. "Such laws must be strengthened in every state."

"On behalf of the many women who have died and the countless numbers of women who have been physically injured in abortion clinics across our nation, and whose abortionists have not been brought to justice, I applaud the jury for recognizing that what happened to Karnamaya Mongar was not an accident," said Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life and co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign.

"Justice for Karnamaya provides a measure of justice for all women harmed by abortion. The abortion procedure kills a child, sometimes kills a mother and is always damaging to women. This product called abortion should be recalled by the government."
