Charlotte, NC -A Charlotte doctor may be on the verge of a medical breakthrough after more than 100 women successfully used an abortion pill reversal kit he created.

"We're looking at about 120-130 women right now who have babies that are surviving and doing well and it looks like we have about a 60 percent success rate, which is much better than if you do nothing,” said Dr. Matthew Harrison, the creator of the kit. “We're hoping that this gives a woman a choice when she thinks she made a mistake. I want to save the baby and do whatever I can to help, and this gives an immediate choice to her.”

The kit was designed by redFONT Marketing Group, a Charlotte advertising and public relations agency.

Dr. Harrison told FOX 46 the treatment is basically a series of progesterone shots which have to be taken within an estimated 72 hours of the abortion pill being taken.

“Those shots consist of one shot a day for three days, and then a shot every other day for a total of two weeks, and then twice a week up until the end of the first trimester which is 13 weeks along,” he said. “The way the abortion pill works is it essentially starves the baby by blocking the natural hormone that's in the woman's body. So if that hormone is blocked, the baby can't survive. What progesterone does, the treatment we give her, is it puts extra hormone into her system, the natural hormone that's already in her system, and it floods her system with progesterone so the abortion pill doesn't work."

Gipsy Salcedo wouldn't have her 3-month-old son Nicholas if it wasn't for the treatment.

The New York City military mom told FOX 46 via phone that she was told all her life she was infertile, only to find out she was pregnant one day. She went to the doctor, and was devastated when she was given a pill she signed for, later found out was the abortion pill.

“The nurse came in and said it taken care of. I said well what do you mean? And she's like well it's gonna terminate your pregnancy, you're gonna have to make Motrin, it's gonna relieve the pain, I was like what do you mean the pain? I'm pro life! You told me I couldn't even have kids why would you think I wouldn't want my child?” she said.

Salcedo said she and her boyfriend went home crying and began to Google options for reversing the effects of the abortion pill.

“We finally found one clinic in New York City that had the treatment,” she said. "She gave me a progesterone shot and then gave me a progesterone capsule. She saw me every week to see how the baby was.”

Baby Nicholas would eventually be born healthy at 7.5 lbs.

“He's such a healthy baby,” Salcedo said.

She spoke about how grateful she was to be able to use the treatment.

“You have no idea, I was crying so hard,” she said. "I know some people would be a little scared of what may happen because those are hormones going into your body, and the doctor told me this isn't 100 percent, that this is more experimental than anything else, and I'm glad that I took it, cause I wouldn't have [Nicholas] now.”

Dr. Harrison hopes to hear more of those success stories.

"It's exciting, I don't see myself as any kind of a genius at all for doing this,” he said. “I did research at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Medical College of Virginia where I went to medical school, and probably just that basic science research just helped me to remember how protein receptors work, and how we can reverse this.

Dr. Harrison said there are currently more than 200 doctors across the country who have endorsed the abortion pill reversal kit and have signed on to use it.

His ultimate goal is to have it on the shelves of every medical center in every major city.

"The only problems we have seen are in women who have taken Cytotec, which is the medication to induce labor in the second abortion pill,” he said. “There's about a five percent chance of some birth defects if women have taken that medication. Most women who have done this procedure had not taken that medication yet.”
