NEW YORK  – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today applauded the House Select Investigative Panel’s decision to probe the practices of notorious late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart.

“LeRoy Carhart is one of the public faces of the abortion industry,” said Fr. Pavone.  “He’s attacked partial birth abortion laws in court and even starred in a documentary that celebrated third-trimester abortionists, but Carhart has also sent 12 women to the hospital in the last four years, five since December, and he’s killed at least two women after botched abortions. The fact that pro-aborts hail him as a hero speaks volumes about the abortion business itself.”

The House select committee investigating the abortion industry has issued nine subpoenas asking for information relating to Carhart’s abortion practices in Maryland and Nebraska, specifically seeking facts regarding five recent cases of women who were rushed from his clinic to local hospitals.  Among those subpoenaed are Carhart, the hospitals that treated his patients, and the emergency responders who transported the women.

“The House Select Panel and Chairwoman Marsha Blackburn are absolutely right to investigate Carhart and his businesses,” Father Pavone said. “I have joined with other pro-life leaders to warn state authorities where he operated about this man. Nevertheless, his practice continues. The American public should know how and why a leading practitioner and advocate for the abortion industry regularly sends women to the emergency room, or to their deaths.”
