WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today commented on the final rules issued by the Department of Health and Human Services regarding the Obamacare abortifacient/contraception mandate and insurance coverage of abortion under Obamacare.
“President Trump continues to make good on his promises to the pro-life movement and to people of faith. We are particularly gratified at Priests for Life that he has decisively dealt with the mandate compelling us to provide abortion-causing drugs and devices to our employees. We would never have complied with this mandate and in fact our lawsuit against it, Priests for Life vs. HHS, went all the way to the Supreme Court.
“The final rules represent a winning situation. Organizations like mine that have both religious and moral objections are protected, as are individuals and businesses whose owners have a sincerely held religious belief. These rules respect our religious freedom rights under the Constitution and existing law.
“I am also very grateful to President Trump and his administration for a new rule that protects Americans from paying for abortion in their health-care coverage. Rules that were set up to prevent taxpayers from unwittingly paying for abortion have not been adequately enforced, but this new rule from HHS will ensure that the rules are followed.”
Evangelist Alveda King, the director of Priests for Life’s Civil Rights for the Unborn, and a personal petitioner in Priests for Life vs. HHS, also hailed the two new rules as “an answer to a prayer.”
“While I continue to pray and work toward an end to the terrible scourge of abortion, I am so grateful that the religious freedom guaranteed to every American has been restored to us,” she said.
