Cardinal Pietro Parolin is the Secretary of State of the Vatican and due to his responsibility he knows very well the reality of the Church on the five continents. He also knows the political situations, as well as the conflicts of our world. And being very close to Pope Francis, he is an exceptional witness of the Pontificate. The cardinal has been in the microphones of COPE this Easter Monday, in 'El Espejo', to be interviewed by the director of the space, José Luis Restán. A conversation that we reproduce in full.
Q. And speaking of old Europe, I do not want us to leave that ... we see that new laws emerge on ethical issues that are increasingly moving away from the Christian roots. Here in Spain we have just had the euthanasia law. There is a generation that has already grown up in total ignorance of the faith and some speak of the need to lead a cultural battle, others insist on the witness of charity, they are not things that are obviously contradicting each other but ... your judgment the main accent of the mission in Europe that has become so difficult at the moment?
A. That is a big problem. I am very sorry for the loss of faith in our Europe, in our culture, in our countries and these anthropological changes that are taking place, losing the identity of the human person rather than a loss of faith, I would say it is a loss of reason. Why? The Pope says it many times. It shocked me a lot. He says for example: the question of abortion is not a religious question. It is certainly also for us Christians from the beginning, from the first documents of the Church there is a total rejection of abortion but it is an argument of reason. Probably today, and what Benedict XVI said, the fundamental problem is the reason, not faith. As far as faith is concerned, I think it is testimony. Of course it is a testimony, how to say it, global, so we have to bear witness to our faith, we have to bear witness to our hope, we have to bear witness to our charity. But the line is this. Today nothing can be imposed but to offer from a consistent and convinced witness of Christian life.Sometimes I do not know if I am doing good or bad but it seems to me that the situation we are experiencing can be compared with the first centuries of the Church when the apostles and the first disciples arrived in a society that did not have Christian values ??but through the testimony of the first communities managed to change the mentality and introduce the values ??of the Gospel in the society of that time. I think this is the way we still have to do today.
