Lord, we pray today
That every eligible citizen will exercise
Their right and duty to vote.
You alone can save us from evil,
But you ask us to cooperate with you,
And voting is one way we do that.
We pray today for those who feel too holy to vote,
Who feel that they will be morally compromised
By choosing an imperfect candidate.
Lord, help your people to understand
That practically every choice in life
Is a choice between imperfect options,
Teach us that voting is not a declaration
That we agree with the candidate on everything,
But rather a temporary and limited transfer of power
To accomplish a specific job description
As we try to limit evil and advance good
In the midst of a fallen and messy world.
You taught your followers, Lord,
That in this world the weeds and the wheat grow together
And that it is not yet time to completely separate them
Until the final judgment.
Give your people patience and wisdom.
May they recognize that while they can never choose evil,
They can always choose to limit evil,
And that is a good.
May we not fail to cast our vote
And may we not waste our vote by simply making it a “statement.”
Rather, may we choose the best of the available candidates
Among those who are likely to win.
May all we do glorify You.
We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
