Father, we pray today
That the Churches and pastors of our land
May sound a loud trumpet blast
To get out the vote And to vote correctly.
Lord, the very birth of this nation
Came about not just through
The rockets’ red glare,
But through the pulpits’ red glare.
Pastors across the budding nation
Proclaimed the blessings of liberty
And the demands of justice.
They preached about the dangers of corruption
And the virtues of citizenship.
Lord, bring about a new Pentecost in our politics.
The Christian gospel has taught us
That the voice of the people matters
Because we are all called
To be your own sons and daughters.
Government power and authority, therefore,
Are transformed into service
Of your people and the rights we receive from you.
May the pastors speak up today,
Without fear or hesitation or confusion.
May they know that they are indeed permitted
And in fact, obliged
To call your people to be informed
About the candidates, the parties and the issues,
And to make sure they vote
And bring many others to vote.
Lord, let the Church arise,
Let freedom be proclaimed and defended,
And enable your people
To bring this nation to carry out
All that you have commanded us.
