URGE YOUR SENATORS NOT TO RUSH INTO A NEW SUPREME COURT JUSTICE
February 18, 2016
Dear Friends,
The sudden death last weekend of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has caused a firestorm of concern and political divide in Washington and across the country. The danger to America if an Obama nominee is confirmed cannot be overstated. And many Republican leaders in the Senate have vowed to refuse to take action on any nominee that President Obama puts forward. Should the President's nominee be confirmed,
The Court will topple to the left like a cruise ship hit by a giant wave and it will be decades, or longer, before balance will be restored.
Earlier this week I asked you to contact Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to applaud him for his vow to block Obama nominees. Now mind you, I would normally be in favor of a President and the Senate acting with reasonable swiftness in replacing a Justice.
But this is no ordinary circumstance.
We are living in the middle of a holocaust of the unborn, and the President and his party have proven themselves committed to continuing it. Any Supreme Court Justice they back will also be committed in the same way.
And we must stop that with every legal maneuver we can.
It's as simple as that.
So today I am asking you to call your own two US Senators with a similar message. If you have Republican senators, assure them that you will stand with them in this vital battle. If your senators are Democrats, insist that they allow the national elections to show which direction the American people want the Supreme Court to take.
Some Republicans seem to be distancing themselves from Sen. McConnell’s resolve, and that’s why I need you to become involved TODAY!
In blocking an Obama nominee, the GOP is not doing anything unconstitutional or immoral. The Senate is not bound to act on any timetable, nor bound to accept any particular nominee.
And Democrats have no footing to object, because they have taken the same position in the past.
In 2007, when President George W. Bush still had 18 months in office, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said that if another vacancy came up in the Supreme Court, the Democrats should refuse to confirm any nominees until a new president was inaugurated. And two years earlier, Schumer and then-Sen. Barack Obama joined a filibuster to try to block the appointment of Justice Samuel Alito.
A call to your U.S. senators today is a way to safeguard America as we know it. Our future is in our hands at this moment, but we must act now.
So please click here for further instructions on making the two phone calls we need you to make.
And please pass along this email to all the contacts you have who may be interested in helping!
Sincerely,

Fr. Frank Pavone
